Smith volunteered and enlisted into the armed forces.
After demobilisation, Smith returned to the bank at College Green, Camden Street, Dundalk, O'Connell Street (1967 - Pro-Manager & 1973 - Assistant Manager).
He married the former Miss Jennie Higgins of Killegney, Co. Wexford.
Smith retired on 17th August 1977.
